When the Makers Come to You: Kamaro'an at 52 GAGE Hong Kong

Antoine VATAR

Some encounters stay with you. When Imay and Dopoh from Kamaro'an walked into 52 GAGE on Gage Street last December, they brought with them something most brand events do not have: real tools, real skills, and two days of genuine time for our clients.

This is what happened when the makers came to Hong Kong.

Who Are Imay and Dopoh

Imay and Dopoh are two of the artisans and brand ambassadors behind Kamaro'an, the Taiwanese label rooted in Pangcah indigenous craft that we have been carrying at 52 GAGE since our early days. They flew in from Taipei not to do a trunk show or a press event, but to spend time with our clients - talking about the brand, demonstrating the craft live, and caring for pieces that clients had already purchased.

It is a rare thing for a brand to do. Most labels send a lookbook and a wholesale order form. Kamaro'an sent two people who actually know how to make the bags.

The Craft Table

Before the first clients arrived, Imay and Dopoh laid out their tools on the round table at the centre of the store. Leather care creams, cutting mats, rattan rings, needles, thread, scissors, reference books. Bags in various states of wear lined up alongside them.

It looked like a proper workshop, which is exactly what it was.

Over the course of two days, they demonstrated the Otal weaving technique live, explained how the Italian vegetable-tanned leather develops its patina over time, and showed clients how to care for their pieces at home. For those who brought in bags they had been carrying for months or years, Imay and Dopoh repaired and conditioned them on the spot.

Meeting the Maker of Your Bag

What surprised us was how many clients came. And how long they stayed.

People who had bought a Kamaro'an bag at 52 GAGE months earlier came back specifically to meet the people behind it. They sat at the table, asked questions, watched the repair process up close. A few brought bags that had travelled with them across Asia, worn and softened with use. Imay and Dopoh handled each one with the same care and attention.

There is something that shifts when you meet the person who made the object you carry every day. The bag does not change, but your relationship to it does.
