Charred Vase
Designed by Gabriel Tan | Handcrafted by João Lourenço
This collection intends to capture the Ikebana approach of flower arrangement. The vases have different sizes, shapes and directions in which multiple configurations can me made. The Charred Vases are five unique forms made in the dying Portuguese art of Barro Preto. Buried and fired in an underground pit called a Soenga, this process of smothering the ceramic removes oxygen and results in a non-homogenous texture of black, grey and earth tones. A vanishing tradition – there are few artisans left who have the knowledge to produce objects in Barro Preto. Together with João Lourenço, Gabriel Tan wishes to rekindle this heritage. The barro preto is a non-homogenous texture of black, grey and earth tones.
Handcrafted in Portugal
Barro Preto Clay
Due to this material and handcrafted process, the vases might present some different shades and color variations. The final texture, consistency and color of the piece depends on the firing conditions and how each vase is being placed inside the pit. All of our pieces are uniquely handcrafted and no one is the same as the other. Observations of such differences across products or orders does not constitute a basis for order cancellation or product returns.
Use a dry soft cloth and do not use household cleaners. While the product has already been delicately hand lacquered after firing by the craftsperson, it may not be 100% waterproof.
