Frequently Asked Questions
What is fish leather?+
Fish leather is a premium, sustainable material made from the skin of fish - typically species whose skin is a by-product of the food industry, such as salmon, cod, or perch. The tanning process transforms the skin into a material that is soft, durable, and visually distinctive.
Is fish leather sustainable?+
Yes. La Baïta uses fish skins that would otherwise be discarded as waste from the food industry, giving a by-product a second life. Combined with low-impact tanning methods, fish leather is one of the more environmentally responsible alternatives to conventional exotic leather.
How durable is fish leather?+
Fish leather is remarkably strong relative to its weight. The interlocking fibre structure gives it excellent tear resistance and longevity - with proper care, a fish leather piece will last many years.
How do I care for a fish leather cardholder?+
Keep dry when possible. Wipe clean with a soft damp cloth if needed. Apply a small amount of leather conditioner occasionally to maintain suppleness. Avoid prolonged exposure to water, which can stiffen the material.
What makes La Baïta unique?+
La Baïta - named after the mountain huts of the Italian Alps - brings a slow-fashion, artisan approach to small leather goods. The use of fish leather reflects a commitment to material innovation and sustainability without sacrificing quality or beauty.
